چکیده

We study the renormalization group flow inweak power-counting (WPC) renormalizable theories. The latter are theories which, after being formulated in terms of certain variables, display only a finite number of independent divergent amplitudes order by order in the loop expansion. Using as a toolbox the well-known SU(2) non-linear sigma model, we prove that for such theories a renormalization group equation holds that does not violate the WPC condition; that is, the sliding of the scaleμ for physical amplitudes can be reabsorbed by a suitable set of finite counterterms arising at the loop order prescribed by theWPC itself. We explore in some detail the consequences of this result; in particular, we prove that it holds in the framework of a recently introduced beyond the Standard Model scenario in which one considers nonlinear Stückelberg-like symmetry breaking contributions to the fermion and gauge boson mass generation mechanism.

Gauge Dependence of Effective Action and Renormalization Group Functions in Effective Gauge Theories

The Caswell-Wilczek analysis on the gauge dependence of the effective action and the renormalization group functions in Yang-Mills theories is generalized to generic, possibly power counting non renormalizable gauge theories. It is shown that the physical coupling constants of the classical theory can be redefined by gauge parameter dependent contributions of higher orders in “hbar” in such a w...

Anti-Ferromagnetic Condensate in Yang-Mills Theory

Non-renormalizable models are traditionally ignored in high energy physics due to their lack of predictive power. In fact, one needs infinitely many counter terms and renormalization conditions to render these theories well defined. In the framework of the renormalization group [1] one usually identifies the ultraviolet fixed point, where the correlation length diverges with the renormalized th...

On the quantum Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism and the renormalization of non linear symmetries

The most convenient tool to study the renormalization of a Lagrangian field theory invariant under non linear local or global symmetries is the proper solution to the master equation of the extended antifield formalism. It is shown that, from the knowledge of the BRST cohomology, it is possible to explicitly construct a further extension of the formalism containing all the observables of the th...

Are Nonrenormalizable Gauge Theories Renormalizable?

We raise the issue whether gauge theories, that are not renormalizable in the usual power-counting sense, are nevertheless renormalizable in the modern sense that all divergences can be cancelled by renormalization of the infinite number of terms in the bare action. We find that a theory is renormalizable in this sense if the a priori constraints that we impose on the form of the bare action co...

A Comment on the Renormalization of the Nonlinear Sigma Model

We consider the recently proposed renormalization procedure for the nonlinear sigma model, consisting in the recursive subtraction of the divergences in a symmetric fashion. We compare this subtraction with the conventional procedure in power counting renormalizable (PCR) theories. We argue that symmetric subtraction in the nonlinear sigma model does not follow the lore by which nonrenormalizab...
